The Main log structure of the Greenbrier Restaurant was built
in the late 1930s. Operating as the Greenbrier Lodge, it catered to hunters,
travelers, and vacationers. Owner Mrs. Blanche Moffet treated her Quests to
breakfast in the morning. Afterwards, they could explore the area or stay at
the lodge and enjoy the mountains from the sun deck (now covered t the
dining room floor) or relax in Gatlinburg’s first concrete swimming pool.
Sleeping arrangements were strict, Married couples occupied the two rooms
that now make up the lounge. Single and Mrs. Moffett shared the two rooms
above the kitchen while gentlemen slept bunk-style in the room across the
lobby, Over the years, many renters have come and gone, including The
University of Tennessee Actors Guild while they performed at Hunter Hills
Theatre off highway 321.
In 1980, Dean and Barbara Hadden Purchase the building and surrounding land
and opened the Greenbrier Restaurant. Through the years, all six of their
children have worked at the restaurant in varying capacities. Dean and
Barbara leased out the restaurant before Dean passed away in 1991. Barbara,
with the help of son David and his wife Becky as managers, re-opened the
restaurant in 1993 Today David and Becky, along with their son Jordan own
and operate the Greenbrier Restaurant. The Hadden family would like to thank
you for your patronage and welcome you to this unique dining experience.
Lydia, The Ghost Of The Greenbrier
In the late 1930’s, a young woman by the name of
Lydia lived at Greenbrier Lodge, off Highway 321 N. in Gatlinburg, Young and
in love Lydia was engaged to be married to a handsome young man who lived in
town.
On the day of her wedding, Lydia dressed in her long, White dress and went
into town to meet her lover at the church.
After several hours of waiting she returned to the lodge unwed, alone at the
lodge, a deep despair seized her. Unable to overcome her anger and
frustration at being jilted, she climbed the stairs to the second floor
landing, threw a rope over one of the rafters and hung herself by the neck.
Several days after her death, her lover was found dead in the smokies mauled
b a mountain cat. The locals said Lydia’s spirit could not rest because of
unfulfilled love, and she had taken on the form of a cat to take revenge.
Today, the unloved Lydia still roams the old Greenbrier Lodge, now the
Greenbrier restaurant. Although several additions have been made to the
building, Lydia is seen only in the original part, often on the stairs or
the second floor landing. Guests who eat their claim to see her small, sad
figure wandering among the tables, and the owners of the restaurant say
there is always an endless variety of cats that roam around outside.
A caretaker at the lodge several years ago was kept awake at night by
Lydia’s pitiful cries of “mark my grave,” he had heard her walking around
the lodge and muttering to herself before this, but he had never been afraid
of her as she had never disturbed him.
After many nights of listening to her cries, the caretaker could not take it
anymore, he knew the spot where she was supposedly buried, and so in the
dark of the night, he went down the hill below the lodge to mark her grave,
he cut down a small tree, made a cross and hammered it into the ground.
After that night he never heard her cries again though she continued to
wander through the lodge. The cross on Lydia’s grave still stands today.
